About Roberta

Roberta A Barr BSc (Hons) SPsychol SNHS Dip M.I.C.H.M.

Roberta is a Life and Health Sciences Graduate with a BSc (Hons) degree in Social Psychology and a qualified practitioner with a Diploma in Psychotherapy & Counselling; she operates a private practice in the Co Antrim village of Ahoghill near Ballymena, Northern Ireland. Roberta also holds a Certificate in Introduction to Counselling from
Queens University, Belfast, an Oxford Cambridge & RSA Certificate in Counselling Skills, the Certificate in Counselling Skills in the Development of Learning included utilising a range of counselling skills in order to help others learn or to overcome blocks to their learning. These skills were demonstrated, assessed and accredited, under the supervision of an ocr approved centre, within the work setting of Social Services.

Roberta has also studied Social Behaviour, Behaviourism and Social Issues, Psychoanalysis and Society, Abnormal, Cognitive and Developmental Psychology.  Advanced topics in social psychology including community mental health, the development of social behaviour in children and young people, psychology in organisations and the psychology of conflict and aggression.

She emphasises the relevance of psychology to social problems and to the study of lifelong development through a range of practical skills involved in studying, evaluating, and changing human social behaviour.

Roberta offers a counselling and psychotherapy service for private patients, which is effective for alleviating depression, anxiety and distress, for recovery from painful or traumatic experiences and losses, and for achieving personal development and change. EFT (emotional freedom techniques) is also available to her clients.

Her person-centred approach to counselling is rooted in humanistic philosophy and ensures a confidential, trusting, non-judgmental therapeutic relationship that has an optimistic view of the individual and a belief that each person has the capacity to move in the direction of more fulfilling and satisfying ways of being and living their lives. It is based on each individual finding their own answers and direction, this is achieved when the client is able to understand their own limitations and potential.

With the current upsurge of interest in emotional health and recent reports that antidepressants have no more effect than a placebo for mildly depressed individuals, many clients decide on the route of private counselling/therapy. This benefit’s the GP by resulting in less pressure on their time, reduces medication costs, clears the referral route and causes less demand on primary care services.

Roberta is a member of the BHMA, the I.C.H.M., UK Therapists, Counselling Directory and is also a registered CCC Counsellor who adheres to the IACP code of ethics and practice. Roberta achieved the highest award which can be bestowed upon a student, in her Practitioner Diploma in Psychotherapy & Counselling qualification.
